One of the scariest decisions I ever made was becoming a dad.
Every parent tells you some version of the same story. You walk into the hospital, and a couple days later you walk out with this tiny person you have no real idea how to take care of. You're afraid to drive with them in the car. You're afraid you're going to drop them. You're afraid you're going to miss something and it's going to hurt them somehow. You're convinced they're going to starve because they didn't get their eighth bottle that morning. It's an anxious, overwhelming season, and every new parent goes through it.
I'm 22 years into being a dad now, and it's the most meaningful thing I've ever done.
Playing it safe would have meant not having kids. It would have been cheaper. Easier. Less risky in every measurable way. I'm so glad I didn't play it safe on that one. Being a father has been the greatest joy I've known.
The same thing has been true in business. I've gambled everything more times than I can count. I've lost sleep over it. I've been stressed in ways that don't fully go away. But here's what I've learned. Playing it safe would have never let me build anything that mattered, whether that was a nonprofit or a for-profit company.
If you've got an idea. A business concept. A book that needs to be written. A song that needs to be created. I'm telling you to make it happen.
Here's what people miss about playing it safe. It's usually not about the money or even the time you might lose. It's about putting something out into the world and knowing it can be criticized. It can be picked apart. It can be put down. I think about this a lot with my friends who are writers. Once you put something on paper, you can't take it back. That's a gutsy move. And it's true for any kind of creator, not just writers. Playing it safe means you never put it out there at all.
But I promise you this. You will never regret making it.
Playing it safe is never the move. Going after it changes you. It transforms who you are. It gives you a strength and a stamina you can't get any other way.
So take your idea. Take your concept. Take your widget or your service or whatever it is sitting in the back of your mind. Go for it. Put it out there. Who cares what people think? Who cares if it fails a few times along the way? Keep going. Because playing it safe guarantees exactly one outcome. It guarantees it never happens.
And if you stretch yourself and actually go for it, there's a real chance it becomes the best thing you've ever done.
I've watched this play out in my own life more times than I can count, and I've never once looked back and wished I'd stayed safe instead. So if you're standing at that edge right now, wondering if it's worth the risk, I hope you'll take it as permission. Not from me, but from every version of yourself that's been waiting to find out what you're capable of. Go build the thing. Your future self is counting on it.
